Meet the Genie Excelerator. It's a great garage door opener that is known for its speed and ease-of-use.
This product was based on a legacy of engineering and marketed to consumers for its security and ease of access. Its primary feature was the speed in which it opens. A fantastic product in line with a company that truly cares about its consumers.
This is a screw driven model, which is based on the same design that had made Genie a name brand for decades. As this model does have its pluses it also has its minuses. The most common Genie Excelerator service, has to do with the circuitry, but that's not the case this time.
This time it was a mechanical failure of the genie screwdriver trolley. This is the small black device that pushes the activator arm forward and backward to open and close your door. Often times when pushing a door larger than normal or from lack of lubrication, the teeth often times seem to wear down. in this case it did feel like the door was slightly heavy which causes a bit more inertia, and wear.

Another possible reason for the gear where may be because this unit was purchased from a hardware store as a homeowner installed item. This is obvious because the rail was bolted together in sections as opposed to one long rail typically sold to garage door dealers. The result is that there are little gaps in the screw which may cause potential breakage areas. This can be avoided by purchasing units from a garage door provider.
This is a great opener and the design is helpful when you're a do-it-yourselfer, but the maintenance may be greater for this type of opener design. Make sure this garage door opener gets lubricated at least once a year. In this situation may not happen to you.
